Apple has released the 7th developer preview of OS X Yosemite. The update arrives as build 14A343f, and includes bug fixes and feature enhancements, making it recommended for all Mac developers to install.
The iOS Dock sits at the bottom of our iPhone, ipod touch, and iPad home screen, intended to hold the most commonly used apps for quicker launching. While it’s well known that you can customize the apps that are contained within the Dock, what’s lesser known is that you can actually reduce the number of apps visible from the 4 default, down to 3, 2, 1, and, if you really want to, 0 apps.
What if the Edvard Munch expressionist classic The Scream was really a reaction to a broken iPhone screen? What if A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte was modernized for the 21st century, what would that Sunday afternoon look like now? The iPhone will soon serve as a true mobile wallet, working with Visa, MasterCard, or an American Express card, and able to make secure mobile payments without whipping out your old fashioned plastic credit card, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Typically Mac users will retrieve the screen resolution of connected displays through the Displays system preference panel in OS X. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that approach, it’s easy and quick, but because it uses the graphical interface of OS X it’s not necessary helpful for scripting purposes or remote management through Remote Login and SSH connections. In these situations, and plenty of others, you may wish to retrieve the current screen resolutions of displays from the command line in Mac OS X.
Installing apps to iOS is easily done through the App Store, but uninstalling apps from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is probably even easier. Yes, many users will know how to do this, but it always surprises me how many people don’t know how to remove an app from their iOS device. Fortunately, Apple has made app removal remarkably simple on the iOS platform, and it’s no exaggeration to say that you can completely uninstall an app in just a few seconds flat.
A purported iPhone 6 with what looks to be a 4.7″ display has been assembled from leaked parts, and the device even turns itself on, but is seemingly stuck on the familiar “Connect to iTunes” recovery mode screen. The wearable device that Apple is expected to announce on September 9 will likely not ship until sometime next year, according to a new report from ReCode.
A report from Bloomberg seems to suggest the upcoming Apple wearable device will be more of an iPhone accessory than a standalone gadget.
Cutting and pasting files within the Mac OS X Finder is an easy way to move files and folders around on the Mac, particularly for Windows converts, but by default the cut and paste function changes permissions and ownership during the file move process. For the most part that is desirable, but if you are logged in as an administrator and are modifying another users files or folders, even the Guest user, you may wish to preserve file ownership and user privileges (permissions in unix-speak) when moving the documents around. Mac OS makes this simple through a hidden function called “Paste Item Exactly”, it’s a somewhat advanced feature in terms of need, but it’s accessible easily through the Edit menu.
Apple has sent out press invitations to an event on September 9, 2014. The invite, shown above courtesy of Wall Street Journal, is simple and cryptic, stating simply “Wish we could say more” and displaying the date “9.9.2014”.
Safari Bookmarks default to saving their names as the title of a webpage or website. That means if a site has a long title, the bookmark name will be equally as long. For accessing bookmarks through the Bookmarks menu that isn’t too big of a deal, but when you’re using the Safari Favorites Bar, long names become truncated and often meaningless, thus renaming them can be a good idea.
Apple will unveil it’s new “wearable” device alongside the iPhone 6 on September 9, according to a new report from the well-sourced Re/Code.
Commonly referred to as the “iWatch”, the Re/Code report calls it a “wearable” and mentions the new Apple product will make use of several iOS 8 features, including HealthKit and HomeKit. Re/Code also speculates that it could be used to have some interaction with Apple TV.
With the official iPhone 6 unveiling just a few weeks away, rumors and hype surrounding the new phone are really heating up.
Part leaks, mockups, conjecture, and overproduced videos showing off little alleged internal components that are entirely meaningless to the average human, are all part of the run-up to the new iPhone release, and that’s where this video showing off the, uhm, leaked “iPhone 6”, comes in. Apple will release a larger iPad with a 12.9″ screen in early 2015, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
Having an external monitor hooked up to a Mac can boost productivity significantly, and most users who get a secondary screen just hook it up and start using it – it works, so why mess around, right? But to get the best picture and color representation out of your external display, you’ll want to take the time to calibrate the screen through a built-in OS X utility. In fact, you should probably calibrate every display you use with your Mac.
Aside from using apps like Photoshop, one of the best ways to make a contact sheet on the Mac is to use Automator to generate the thumbnail sheet as needed. But because Automator requires the usage of an OS X scripting utility, it’s beyond the comfort level of many users, and it also takes time to set up the Automator thumbnail script. If you just need to quickly create a contact sheet of image thumbnails for proofing, you may not have the time for that.
That’s where this trick comes into play, it’ll quickly generate a thumbnail contact sheet of pictures almost instantly and with very little effort. The downside, however, is that the generated quick and dirty proof sheet is not particularly high DPI, meaning you’ll want to keep these for digital usage only – printing them out is just not going to look that good.
