iOS 8 Beta 3 Download Released for Developers by Apple

Jul 7, 2014 - 1 Comment

iOS 8 Beta 3 Apple has released the third beta release of iOS 8 to those registered with the iOS Developer Program. All eligible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices can install the beta 3 update immediately, which is versioned as build number 12a4318c.

The update is said to include numerous bug fixes and improvements, and marks another milestone towards the fall public release of iOS 8.

The simplest way for developers to download and install iOS 8 beta 3 is to use the Over-The-Air Update mechanism that is accessible on all devices currently running an iOS 8 beta build by visiting Settings > General > Software Update, the update weighs in around 400MB for many devices, but as usual with OTA updates it requires a bit more space than that to complete the installation. The new version is also available to download as IPSW firmware files from Apple’s iOS Dev Center, which would need to be installed manually, yet another reason why OTA is generally easier for most users.

iOS 8 beta releases are intended for usage by developers only, for the purpose of testing and developing apps, widgets, websites, and functionalities for the upcoming version of iOS. Beta releases are notoriously unstable and buggy, making them best reserved for secondary devices that are intended for development purposes. Note that users can always downgrade from iOS 8 back to a stable iOS 7 build if they determine the beta experience is not satisfactory.

Apple has publicly stated that iOS 8 will see a public release this fall. The latest Apple rumors suggest the newest iOS version may ship alongside a new iPhone, iPad, and possibly other new and updated hardware as well.
