How to Add Photos to a New Photos Album on iPhone & iPad with iOS 13

Many of us take hundreds or even thousands of pictures on our iPhones and iPads over the course of a year. All of these photos are mixed along with all other saved images too, including screenshots, images you download from the internet, and pictures you receive from social networks, all in the primary camera roll photos album. This can make it difficult to find a specific picture within the stock Photos app. This is why organizing your pictures with albums is key when it comes to being able to quickly access the photos you want to.

With each new iteration of iOS, Apple makes certain tweaks to the Camera and Photos app in order to make it more user-friendly, but mostly it just confuses long time iOS users. The recent iOS 13 software update is no different, as Apple has changed the way you add photos to an album.

If you are trying to create your own photo album on your device running iOS or iPad, you’re in the right place as we’ll be discussing exactly how you can add photos to a new photos album on iPhone and iPad with iOS and iPadOS.

This procedure is targeted towards people who own an iPhone or iPad running iOS 13 or later, since Apple has moved the “Add to Album” functionality to the share sheet. Thus, make sure your device has been updated and simply follow the steps below to create a new album and add photos to it.

  1. Open the stock “Photos” app from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad.

  6. Now, you’ll see a bunch of existing albums on your device, but considering you want to add these photos to a separate album, just tap on “New Album…” as shown below.

  7. Now, enter a name for your new album and tap “Save” to create it.

  8. If you head over to the “Albums” section within the Photos app now, you’ll notice your newly created album located right next to the “Recents” album.

That’s how you add photos to a newly created album.

By following the same procedure, you could always add more photos to the same album, and keep it updated whenever you want to.

Categorizing the Photos by albums is the first step to organizing the photo library on your iPhone or iPad. For example, if you travel a lot and take countless pictures, naming albums after the places you visited would make it a lot easier to access the pictures you shot on your device.

That being said, supported applications automatically create albums of their own, like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and even the Screenshots album, within the Photos app. Let’s say, you saved a photo from Twitter or shared a photo on Instagram, these social networks have their separate photo albums, so the pictures you downloaded or shared will be automatically moved to their respective albums labeled as such, and the best part is, you don’t really have to do anything.

Perhaps in the future there will be smart albums and other sorting mechanisms for photos too. In any event, it’s great to be able to create your own custom albums and add photos to it on your iPhone or iPad as desired.

We hope you managed to organize your iPhone or iPad photo library by sorting your pictures into albums. What do you think about the changes to the camera app and Photos app with iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 and later? Things like camera filters and photos editing have improved and changed. Did the update make it more user-friendly for you, or did it just hamper the familiarity you used to have? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments section down below.

Why the change of name from “Camera Roll” to “Recents”? At least Cameral Roll told you that the picture/video had been taken on that iDevice as opposed to My Photo Stream which indicated that the pictures/video had been synced/copied to that iDevice.
In fact “Taken on this Device” would have been even better than “Camera Roll”. But “Recents” – doesn’t convey anything.

Still don’t understand the logic why Apple don’t allows to MOVE a picture to an album. Now you have a lot of albums and the CameraRoll, or whatever is the new name, full with the same pictures. Any idea whats behind this?

    • yyz says:

The photo doesn’t actually move. The albums contain pointers to the original photo.

A single photo can belong to different albums, but there’s only one saved version of the photo.

Albums are more like “labels” or “tags” than like folders within finder

    • Fadi says:

asking same question cannot think why users cannot move photos.

  3. Gump says:

I wonder why the Photos app has still remained fairly static after many years. It lacks many features that could make sorting through 100’s of photos much easier (select, drag and drop for example). What is Apple holding back on? The app does just the basics and it’s time for a change.
