tvOS 14 for Apple TV has been released

Apple has released tvOS 14 for Apple TV users. The final version is now broadly available after going through a lengthy beta development process.

tvOS 14 includes some noteworthy new features, including system wide Picture-in-Picture support, improved HomeKit features with a Home section within Control Center, support for YouTube video in 4k, support for AirPlay 4k videos and photos, multiple users for Game Center and Apple Arcade, audio sharing for multiple pairs of AirPods, support for Microsoft Xbox Elite 2 controllers, and more.

Additionally, Apple also released watchOS 7 for Apple Watch, iOS 14 for iPhone, and iPadOS 14 for iPad. MacOS Big Sur remains under active development with a later release date.

Apple TV models compatible with tvOS 14

tvOS 14 is compatible with Apple TV 4th generation and Apple TV 5th generation devices only. These are also known as the Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models.

Earlier models of Apple TV are not compatible with tvOS 14.

How to Install tvOS 14 for Apple TV

Updating tvOS is relatively simple, here’s how the to do it directly on the Apple TV itself:

  1. Open the “Settings” app on Apple TV, then go to “System”
  2. Choose “Software Update” and select to install tvOS 14 when it shows as available

The Apple TV will download the update then restart automatically to complete installation of tvOS 14. Do not interrupt the software installation process.

Once the device has updated, you’ll be free to use the new features on Apple TV. System wide Picture-in-Picture mode is perhaps the most obvious user-facing feature and can be accessed by playing a movie or TV show, then tapping the touch surface on the Apple TV remote and swiping up to highlight and select the Picture in Picture option. This will minimize the existing video into PiP mode, similar to how it works on iPadOS, iOS, and macOS.

Aside from tvOS 14, Apple also has issued iOS 14 for iPhone, iPadOS 14 for iPad, watchOS 7 for Apple Watch, and Safari 14 for MacOS Catalina and Mojave. MacOS Big Sur will be released at a later date.
