iPhone 14 Won’t Turn On? Here’s the Fix

Oct 15, 2022 - 100 Comments

iPhone 14 Pro black screen won't turn on

Some users who are new to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series are finding they can’t turn on their device, or that iPhone 14 won’t turn on when they press the Power button on the side of the device.

This is usually a super simple fix, so if you’re having issues with the iPhone 14 powering on, read along and you’ll have it resolved in no time. And yes these tips apply to all iPhone 14 models, including iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone 14.

Fixing iPhone 14 Pro Black Screen or When Won’t Turn On

First, realize that sometimes if iPhone 14 is powered off, you have to hold the Power button down for a few seconds to get the iPhone to power on. If you’ve tried that and it’s not turning on, then read along for the other troubleshooting steps.

1: Charge the iPhone 14 for a While

The most likely reason an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro won’t turn on is that there is simply not enough battery power.

Thus, simply connect the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 to a power source and let it charge for 15-20 minutes, and then while it is still connected to power, press and hold the Power/Lock button to power the iPhone 14 on.

2: Force Restart iPhone 14 to Power On

You can force restart iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro by performing the following set of actions:

  1. Press and release Volume Up button
  2. Press and release Volume Down button
  3. Press and hold Power/Lock button until you see the  Apple logo on screen

Sometimes, if the iPhone is not responding to the typical procedure for starting up or powering on, trying the force restart sequence will resolve the issue.

3: Contact Apple Support

If you’ve charged and force rebooted the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Plus, or iPhone 14 and it’s still not powering on, your next best bet is to contact Apple. Rarely, hardware issues can cause device problems, but since the iPhone 14 is new it will be under full warranty and you’ll be able to get the problem worked out quickly thanks to Apple’s well known great support.

You can find your local Apple Support phone number here to reach out to.

Did you get your iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Plus, or iPhone 14 to turn on as expected? Let us know what worked for you in the comments.

Problem as stated above. I tried the various techniques
/holding times and still get “iPhone Unavailable” and “support.apple.com/iphone/passcode”. Neither worked. Phone auto-uploaded iOS 17 yesterday and experienced no problems.

    • Mino says:

You must know the iPhone passcode to be able to unlock the iPhone. If you forgot your passcode you will have to use your Apple ID to unlock it or to reset your iPhone unfortunately.

  2. Pratim says:

This is really magic, my phone was not turning on with lot of tries, then I found this solution, tried and it worked!! Battery was 100% once it turned on, why this happened??? U need a quick press of vol up and down button one after the other and then looooooooong hold of the right side power button till the Apple logo appears. I didn’t even think it will work, but it really did like magic

  3. Annette says:

I did this and it worked, but it has happened several times. Is there a problem with the phone? Will Apple be fixing it for good so I don’t have to do this all the time?

  4. Holly says:

I kept trying this and nothing. Read more comments and realized it is all in the speed of pressing the volume buttons. Really fast. Then hold power button. Came right on after several tries but I was holding the volume buttons too long.

  5. Glenn says:

My wife’s 14 pro was working fine one minute, totally dead the next. Googled it, found this site. Took several tries, quick up & down, then hold the right-side button. Longer each time. Finally held it for close to a minute and the phone turned on. Thank You!!

  6. Ro says:

OMG thank you! I really didn’t think this would work but was desperate! Here’s exactly what i did:

    quick press up volume
    quick press down volume
    hold power button

    So thankful it worked!

  7. Sri says:

Whoaaa!thats crazy!! This totally worked – thank you so much!

  8. Laura says:

My iphone 14 plus completely died overnight while plugged into my charger. The hard reboot worked for me. It showed a 79% battery so it’s super weird that it would die, but at least the reboot worked. Thanks!

    • Libby says:

It seems to be the magic charge, mine showed 76% when it died. A loooong hold of the power button after very quick up and down buttons was the key. Thanks everyone!!!

  9. Leah Payne says:

Woohoo! The method worked. My Iphone 14 pro died during the ight while connected to the charger. I tried the volume up/down and then on button and it worked! I had to do it several times and quickly, but it finally came on. Thank you for the help.

  10. Austinite says:

SHEESH!! Thank you! This actually worked.

Phone had been stuck on an always on spot (displaying 4:27am, even caused me to oversleep) while on the charger, so I knew it hadn’t died, but nothing worked. Not even what I thought was the hard reset method, which is holding the power button and volume up button for a while, was working. Luckily I had another phone to Google the issue and find this. I’ll admit, I thought this sounded odd as the combo to remedy, but in 1 try it worked like a charm. I thought my phone had bricked after the most recent update, but this got it back right. THANK YOU!!

  11. DAWN M says:

OMG THIS TOTALLY WORKED AND I AM SO THANKFUL I FOUND THIS

  12. Dawn W. says:

I dropped my iphone 14Pro, nothing broken but now SUPER HOT and won’t turn on.
Keep trying the restart but so far nothing.
    Any suggestions?

  13. Deb Kay says:

IT WORKED…this actually works! I usually don’t leave comments but for this I have to! I was freaking out that after charging my iPhone 14 pro max it didn’t turn on but do the reset option by pressing the volume button up and down quickly and then power button for a longgggg time until you see the Apple logo! Keep trying again and again it WILL work.

  14. Jeff Walters says:

WOW!!! It’s crazy how fast you have to do the buttons… when I finally got the correct speed it worked like a charm. Thanks for all the advice.

    • Robin Ames says:

      Jeff,
Were you needing to update to 16.3.1 as someone mentioned? I was running 16.3.1 and my phone was dead with black screen, once I completed a forced restart, my phone was at 60%! Received phone from Verizon as Christmas present with I had kept my iPhone 11!

  15. Isaiah N Warkins says:

Thank you so so much. I’ve had mine for about 5 or 6 months now. And, this hasn’t ever happened. So thank you for the help. And reading the comments to know it’s about the speed of the sequence really helped. Thank you

  16. Ronda K Carlson says:

Woke up early, phone charged all night. I used my phone for an hour on social media then went to get ready for work. Got to work (used wireless charged in car on the way) and my 14 pro max wouldn’t do ANYTHING. I tried 4-5 times to do the Vol. up Vol. down then the side button but it didn’t work. Came here to get some tips and tricks and learned that the key is to do these moves very quickly. Tried it and it worked the first time. So keep trying and do it very quickly. Good luck.

  17. Larry z says:

I have a 3 month Iphone 14 pro. After about 40-50 times following these suggestions the phone turned back on from being dead for three to four hours. Apple recommended I immediately update the operating system 16.3.1. The Apple Store maintenance manager said he’s been seeing this a lot and 16.3.1 should fix issue. .

    • Em says:

OMG – THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I was just freaking out, as well. Charged phone overnight, kind of woke up. Wondered why I hadn’t heard my alarm and phone was a black brick. Your advice saved my sanity!

Unfortunately, I’m using 16.4.1 and this happened *sigh*

  18. AMG says:

OMG woke up this morning late because my alarm didn’t go off. Charged my phone overnight as I always do but when I Picked up my phone this morning it was a complete Brick!! Wouldn’t charge and/or turn on. I held down both volume and power button hoping for a hard restart and nothing. Came here and read the comments, tried about 7-8 times. The key is in the quickness and succession of pressing the buttons in the sequence recommended. On my 8th attempt it worked!!! Don’t give up! Good luck!

  19. Blake Carpenter says:

It worked for my iphone 14! I had it charging all night all and woke up to it “dead”. I couldn’t get it turned on until doing the volume up, down, press & hold lock button. It worked on my 3rd attempt.

  20. Sapphire says:

This worked, the key is to be very quick. It took me a few tries before it worked.

  21. Shauna says:

Yes! This worked. Thank you. Why does a brand new phone have this issue?

  22. DredsOne says:

Force Restart worked on second try thanks for the help

  23. Sandy Gee says:

Thank you for all the info on here. Woke up and iPhone 14 Pro Max black screen after charging overnight. Did the quick press up volume followed by quick press volume then held power button in until Apple logo came up. Worked first time! Hope there’s a software update to fix this soon

    • Ian Kulpaca says:

Thank you, the quickness was not specified. The buttons must be pressed quickly sequentially in order without a break.

      • Jennifer La Vigne says:

I am having the same issue with my new iphone Pro Max with the black screen and will not power on. I have tried all the hints with no luck. Any further suggestions? Please

      • Jan Lomicka says:

I tried twice with no fesult until I read this tip about the quickness. It worked!

        • Beth says:

Whew! Finally! Forced restart wasn’t working on my 14 Pro after repeated tries. I bought the phone for a trip to Europe so I wouldn’t have to lug my Nikon… Getting panicked… Finally I did quick up, quick down and long hold on restart! Yay!

  24. Angela says:

This just happened to my daughter who got her phone yesterday. We too have been iPhone users for years (iPhone 5’s) and just upgraded from the 11 and never had issues like this. Thank you for this solution article and thank you for all the comments.
Has anyone had this issue multiple times?
I am wanting to upgrade my 11, but now wondering if I should just go to the 13.

  25. Peter Mckenzie says:

    Damn, Thank youuu!!!

  26. Kiki says:

    Thanks a lot!

  27. Ida U says:

Was able to reset my black screen – thank you so much!

  28. Kristen says:

Yup, as above, keep trying quick up, down and then hold the power button. Took me multiple tries. A bit disconcerting since I have an important meeting in the Morning and this is my wake-up alarm!

  29. MollyDooker says:

This worked for my iPhone14 Max. Hard to believe Apple doesn’t have this fix on their own support site yet.

  30. Mrs A says:

Forced restart worked the first time! Thank you! I was panicking at first…!

  31. claude says:

Yep finally did work. Took the advice of pressing up and down volume buttons quickly, then the power. Are we WAY too connected/dependent to our devices?

    • Kave says:

Thanks. I got mine power up by pressing the up, down and power button. I am travelling tomorrow and I almost wanted to get a new phone! Lol

    • Allen says:

Yes. We are way too connected to our devices. I was literally having a mental breakdown when I had this issue just now (also when I had phone problems in the past).

Thank Google I was able to find this webpage in the search results. Like others have said, it does take a few tries, but this trick does work.

  32. Kim says:

And how about me, my hearing aids was connected with iPhone 14 pro max ,unless the phone is on otherwise my hearing aids wouldn’t work !You try until your fingers bleed !!!!

  33. Cliff Peterson says:

Same. Had to do the Vol Up, Vol Down, hold Power about 6-8 times before it worked. But it did work.

  34. Lee says:

Quick touch of the Volume up then Volume down buttons and longer hold of the iPhone 14 pro Max on/off button until apple logo came on and worked for me.😎Phew!!!

  35. Robert Bachman says:

Woke up this morning and my 14 Pro Max was dead. I plugged it in, and followed the steps. After many attempts, it finally turned on. Whew! Thank you!

  36. Ed says:

Don’t give up. I tried a dozen times, press and release quickly and finally it works. :)

  37. Ishwar says:

I have the same issue with iPhone 14 when I updated to iOS 16.1 in two days of purchase. I visited nearest apple service centre and they raised invoice which says they need to replace the phone with exchange price of 67,500 because of unauthorised modifications. The phone is just two days old.
I have tried this for more than 10 times. I held power button for 30 seconds every time. Am I doing it wrong?

  38. Mike Immerman says:

Held down the power button for what seemed like forever after reset but it it did finally work. Battery at 100%. I’ve already been back to Apple for a software update on my new 14 pro. Second issue in 30 days. I love the call quality, but I had zero issues with my 7plus for 7 years. Replaced the screen and battery twice. 14 pro, 2 crashes in 30 days.

  39. G. Scott says:

Had the same issue today. Tried it several times and it didn’t work until I did it quickly. It’s crazy this happens given the cost of these phones.

  40. JD says:

My wife handed me her new iPhone 14 this morning with the same issue. Followed your procedure. Nothing. Then I read other people kept trying. Did the trick after about the 10th try. Thanks.

    • Ishwar says:

  41. Diana says:

It happened to me today. Gave me a scare, because i have a very busy day ahead of me. This force reset method worked. Just have to keep trying, took me about 10 times or more. Dont give up. Really hope it wont happen again after this!

  42. Lore says:

First time getting Apple. Will definitely go back and change it to Samsung.

  43. Blake cooper says:

The trick with the sequence is you must hold down the lock power button for about10 seconds. Don’t let go. It does work though.

  44. L says:

Same issue, wake up in the morning the phone dead as heal. Quick press and release of volume up botton than volume down, pushed the power botton untill the apple logo popped. Everything worked as described.

  45. Ryan says:

This fix worked for me. Thanks! Was panicking for a minute.

  46. Eric says:

Same thing for me on new 14 pro max. Frustrating. Must be software issue.

  47. L T says:

Thank you. Woke up, phone was completely dead. Would not power on. Was about to head to the nearest Apple Store (ugh) and decided to check here first. Glad I did…I am back online, thank you!

  48. Berto says:

This is ridiculous, happened to me this morning.

  49. Sharkus says:

This happened to my iPhone 14 Pro this morning. Thanks for the tip on getting things working again. After getting it turned back on the battery showed a 76% charge, so this isn’t caused by the battery running low. Should we be worried seeing this is happening with phones that are not even 1 month old?

    • Leeroy Jenkins says:

I think there’s a software glitch because my phone did it this morning and showed 76% as well and it was on the charger all night . Just make sure to press the volume up and down buttons quickly then you made need to hold the power button for 20-30 seconds before it turns on.

      • Jason Barish says:

Thank you bro. I was trying everything and it wouldn’t work. Finally go it to turn on and my phone is at 100%. Super strange and definitely not battery related.

      • William Johnson says:

Thank You !! Mine went out this morning sometime after midnight while charging. The volume up, volume down and hold the power button did it for me the 2nd time. Phone came back at 80% charged…

      • Carly says:

Thank you so much!!! The extra details in the comment helped.

      • Lisa says:

Crazy! Had to do this hack this morning, and also 76% battery!

  50. Anaceli says:

I pressed and released the up button, then the down button, then held the power button until the apple logo appeared. Works!!!.

  51. Nancy YACOUB says:

I tried with no luck initially. When I unplugged the phone and did the up down button superfast in succession it came back on. Thank you for the advice. This is my first iPhone, I have had Samsung phones for as long as I remember, they work like a charm. Can’t believe that Apple phones are this lousy.

  52. Ana says:

I was listening to music in my truck on my way home, once I got home I disconnected my phone from the USB cord from the truck & placed my phone in my coat, I got inside the house pulled out my phone and it was completely blank/black/dead, i remember seeing a 80% battery charge so it wasn’t dead from the battery. Searched online and I tried everything i found on it to do and after reading the comments of peoples experiences. After 15 mins and trying the volume up and down along with the lock button it finally turned on.. This has never happened to me or anybody I know. I’ve been an iPhone carrier since 2010. I was surprised after reading and seeing that this is A THING that happens.

  53. Tim says:

I’ve tried all these combinations and the phone is still flat dead. It was working fine last night – I wrote a Note just before I switched off and that Note is in the Cloud, accessible from this iPad. But the iPhone 14 Pro itself is completely blank. I’ll take it to the Apple store later – I’m not impressed at all.

  54. Aaron says:

I’m currently traveling abroad for work. Woke up and my phone was completely black. This combo worked but only after trying it a few dozen times at different speeds. I would have given up hope if it wasn’t for Craig’s comment saying to just do the combo faster. For me, it was a kind of slower volume up press, quick volume down press and hold the power button that worked. Wtf Apple…. Literally a brand new phone.

  55. Craig says:

Thank you Thank you and Thank you. I tried the up/down power button a dozen times and it didn’t work, until I did it quickly and the phone came back on.

    Thank you again….

  56. Stephan says:

Worked fine but, anyone knows why this happens?

  57. Ed says:

Helpful article. The quick touch of the up then down volume buttons and longer hold of the on/off button worked for me. BS that this is necessary.

    • Lee says:

      This worked for me!! Thanks!
iPhone14 pro max , iOS 16.1.2. Very buggy.
The quick touch of the up then down volume buttons and longer hold of the on/off button worked for me

  58. Jessica says:

Thank you for this comment!!!! I tried everything but it wouldn’t work until I did it super speed. I was starting to panic.

  59. Mary says:

You are a genius!! I was in a complete panic because I did the same steps over and over (vol up dn hold pow) but held vol buttons too long!! When I did it quickly like you said it finally worked.

  60. Baker says:

I have tried everything listed here!!!! I need to access my phone!!

  61. Chuck says:

At first I couldn’t get the reset to work. I pressed and released the up button, then the down button, then held the power button for like 20 seconds. Nothing. Then I thought…. let me try pressing and releasing the up button, then the down button a little faster. Kinda like typing in a cheat code on the old NES controllers. If you go too slow it doesn’t work. I went faster and it worked.

  62. Brian Johnson says:

Tried the listed steps. Nothing would happen. Eventually tried holding both volume up and down at the same time and power and holding all three at once for a few seconds and Apple logo finally appeared and phone came back on.

  63. chris says:

Nothing I do will work. Tried every step suggested above. Phone has been on the charger for hours as well. Nothing

  64. Celeste says:

Had to go through force restart procedures about 5 or 6 times then the Apple logo came on, phone started working.

  65. Deboni says:

The force restart isn’t working and the only apple support info listed is a phone number??? I CAN’T EVEN TURN MY PHONE ON!!!

  66. Shevon Luckey says:

It worked! Had to do it a couple of times but it work! Thanks!

  67. Ashley says:

Forced restarted my iPhone 14 pro max as it was not turning on and successful
    Thank you

  68. Schrock Norman says:

My MacBook Air M1 does not recognize my iPhone 14 Pro when I try to Airdrop something.

  69. Mister Clown says:

This article is completely hilarious !
APPLE is such a big company!
    I’m still laughing about it…
