MacOS Sonoma Release Date Set for September 26

MacOS Sonoma will be released on Tuesday, September 26. MacOS Sonoma, which is versioned as macOS 14, will be will be available as a free update to Mac users.

MacOS Sonoma Features

MacOS Sonoma includes a a variety of new features, including the return of Desktop Widgets (but they don’t call it Dashboard this time), tons of new screen savers and desktop wallpapers, a fancy optional moving wallpaper feature, a redesigned Lock Screen, Safari Profiles support, Safari Private Browsing is now authentication locked, new video conferencing options in FaceTime, autofill support for PDF files, improvements to autocorrect, an optional Game Mode, new Messages features, and more.

MacOS Sonoma 14 Supported Macs & Compatibility

Apple has specific system requirements for MacOS Sonoma, you can see the official list of MacOS Sonoma compatible Macs here, but basically it’s this; if your Mac is from 2018 or newer, it will run MacOS Sonoma. The only pre-2018 Mac that will run Sonoma is the 2017 iMac Pro. Otherwise, MacOS Sonoma is for 2018 onward hardware only.

Installing MacOS Sonoma

Installing MacOS Sonoma is done the same way that updating macOS system software is achieved.

If you’re on MacOS Ventura, you can update through  Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

If you’re on macOS Monterey or earlier, you can update through  Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update.

You will only see the MacOS Sonoma available after it has been released, and if your Mac is compatible with the update.

How do I install MacOS Sonoma final if I’m running MacOS Sonoma beta?

For Mac users who are running MacOS Sonoma beta, you will be able to update to MacOS Sonoma final when it becomes available.

Once you install the final version of MacOS Sonoma, you likely want to opt-out of beta updates for future beta releases of Sonoma, and instead stay with the stable track of future system updates.

Apple has said that MacOS Sonoma will be released to the public on September 26 of the year 2023. That’s a Tuesday, and a day plus a week after the iOS 17 release date of September 18.
