Why I’m Going All-In on MacOS 27 Golden Gate Beta
I know it’s only in beta, and probably halfway through the beta cycle at that, but I’m going all in on MacOS 27 Golden Gate. Why, you might ask? Because, for me, the MacOS 27 beta is better than MacOS 26 Tahoe is, in some pretty critical ways.
And to be clear, I do not recommend this for anyone else, this is me throwing caution to the wind on my own personal Macs. But I just am fed up with the bugs of MacOS Tahoe enough that I want a change, and I’m willing to embrace the more risky beta experience instead. And here’s some specific reasons why.
Spotlight actually works in Golden Gate
This is a big one for me. I use Spotlight as my primary launcher for apps, and for opening any file(s) that I know the name of. I don’t know what happened with macOS Tahoe but for whatever reason Spotlight fails constantly for me. In Tahoe, if I search for “Spotify” then Spotlight will often be completely blank, or, if something does show up, it’s often a link to the Spotify website, or even the Spotify app on my iPhone (via iPhone Mirroring), and somehow the Spotify app in my Applications folder is not found. It’s not just the Spotify app that can’t be found it’s basically any app, or any local file, any local search, for any document, seems to fail frequently to the point where Spotlight is not reliable.
I would not be able to count the number of times I have tried to use Spotlight in Tahoe to open an app or file and it just does nothing, or is so slow and inaccurate, that it’s basically useless. And yes I’ve done the troubleshooting tricks for this specific problem as recommended by my colleague Paul, but the fixes don’t last.
Again I don’t know how or why MacOS Tahoe broke Spotlight like this, but it did (for me).
Fortunately, in MacOS 27 Golden Gate beta, Spotlight works quickly and precisely again, just as it should.
Liquid Glass is so much better in Golden Gate
When the Liquid Glass interface debuted in the OS 26 suite, it was met with just about every possible emotion; adoration, awe, horror, dismay, the full gamut. I actually don’t mind Liquid Glass on iOS 26 or iPadOS 26, but on MacOS 26 Tahoe it feels very sloppily implemented, and there are some usability difficulties that bother me enough to be happy to say sayonara to Tahoe.
While Liquid Glass isn’t perfect in MacOS 27 Golden Gate, it’s much better in my opinion, and there’s even a slider to adjust how transparent the interface is.
Memory & resource management seems better
MacOS 27 Golden Gate is advertised as being performance focused, and maybe it’s all in my head, but even in beta it feels faster and better to me in day-to-day usage than Tahoe. It also appears that memory and resource management are better optimized in MacOS 27 beta. How this translates to my Mac in real world use is that things just feel snappier, and there are fewer slowdowns compared to
Your mileage might vary on this, but despite being in beta, Golden Gate just feels better performing, more refined, and better polished than Tahoe.
MacOS 27 is a beta, but somehow feels less buggy than all the bugs of MacOS Tahoe
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I frequently encounter bizarre and nonsensical bugs in macOS Tahoe. Here are a few I have encountered in just the past few days alone:
Mac refuses to sleep because an app I have never used was preventing sleep
I was unable to put my MacBook Air to sleep, whether by the  Apple menu or by closing the lid, the Mac just remained on and got quite hot. Eventually I looked in Activity Monitor of macOS Tahoe and discovered that “Podcasts” app – an app I have never used on this Mac – was running in the background and preventing the Mac from sleeping. What? Why? I don’t know, but annoying! Force quitting the Podcasts background app (why was it even running in the first place?) allowed the Mac to sleep as normal.
Weird UI glitches
On another occasion as I was troubleshooting yet another weird macOS Tahoe experience, I went into Activity Monitor and it looked like this:
I frequently encounter weird GUI glitches in macOS Tahoe. Maybe it’s just me? Maybe I’m doing something wrong?
Apps randomly crash in Tahoe, frequently
And apps randomly crash. I’ve had Safari, Chrome, ImageOptim, and Numbers all spontaneously crash in recent days with Tahoe. Why? I don’t know:
Spotlight really doesn’t work
And even though I already covered the problems with Spotlight not working, I’ll mention it again because this is just a constant problem in macOS Tahoe for me:
No seriously, Spotlight in Tahoe does not consistently work even for exact match local searches
Or here’s a screenshot from right now, where I’m searching for an exact match file name “macOS Tahoe logo” (an image file on my Mac) and … Spotlight in macOS Tahoe can not find it. Instead it’s showing me random crap web results? What the heck is going on here?

MacOS 27 beta isn’t perfect, and it’s not for everyone
To be completely clear, MacOS 27 beta is not perfect – it’s still in beta after all. There are going to be bugs, there are weird quirks that are typical with beta operating systems. The beta experience is not for everyone, by any means. But if you’re fed up with macOS Tahoe like I am, and you’re willing to backup your Mac with Time Machine, install the MacOS 27 beta, and deal with the beta bugginess and quirks, you might appreciate some of the improvements that Golden Gate has to offer already.
Maybe I will completely regret this decision? Maybe the MacOS 27 beta will be even worse than macOS Tahoe has been for me? I don’t know, but I’m fed up enough that I am willing to find out!
