Mac OS X 10.7 “Ceiling Cat” Alpha Build
Sep 16, 2009 - 25 Comments
The next super secret Mac OS X alpha is in the works! In an obvious jab at the feline obsession with Mac OS X build names, a satirical image of a 10.7 build installer has appeared on Flickr, titled…. Mac OS X 10.7 Ceiling Cat! I’ve never really understood Apple’s cat naming system, if anyone does please explain it to me, but Ceiling Cat does make you wonder what cat name we’ll see in the upcoming versions of Mac OS X.

I take it that you will soon have an .iso or .dmg image to download the OS X 10.7 Lion Hackintosh. Is there a possible release date. I am sure you will get a lot of help from around the world to contribute to the new cat. Well all I can say is good luck and God Speed. Let hackintosh freedom ring!!!!
[…] Mac OS X 10.7 Lion – the name is still pure speculation, but based on the Lion face peaking out from behind the logo, this is somewhat obvious. Plus, it has a better ring to it than Mac OS X Ceiling Cat. […]

Apple’s major OS X releases are named after “big cats”. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_cat).
That’s really about it.
(For comparison: Ubuntu Linux releases are named after animals, in alphabetical order; Debian Linux releases are named after ‘Toy Story’ characters, in no apparent order; and Microsoft Windows, in roughly the same time period as OS X, has had ME, XP, Vista, and 7.)

Man, I did love that picture!

At least it is better than Microsoft’s naming scheme for their OS. 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 – Not to mention the Home, Business, Ultimate, etc varieties. The only thing consistent with it is the word “Windows” . It all seems rather schizophrenic to me.
“I have read that the names are in order of fastest. Each version is named with a faster cat then the last one”
Rusty, wherever you got this information is very misinformed. Cheetahs are the fastest land animal living so that kind of puts an end to that theory. Personally I like the naming convention for OS X, it adds a little flavor to it.
I have read that the names are in order of fastest. Each version is named with a faster cat then the last one. As for snow leopard, the OS was only an overhaul of leopard so they just added to the name and it was snow leopard.
How about OSX 10.7 Tacgnol?
OSX 10.7 will be Wet Kitty
Mac OS X LOLCat
Mac OS X Clouded Leopard.
I think that the name isn’t so important it’s just a great OS and I love it :D
The cat names come from german armored vehicles in chronological order. There is no “snow leopard,” but there IS a leopard 2. I just think apple wanted to keep leopard in the name, but didn’t think “2” was appropriate (think, os 10.6.1 leopard 2… too many numbers)
Germany still makes leopard 2’s, so I wonder what the next one will be. Wouldn’t be surprised if they switched over to os 11.
[…] and are really based on nothing more than rumors and speculation. It’s safe to assume that Mac OS X 10.7 will probably not be called Ceiling Cat… but if MacRumors is right, perhaps we’ll get some more information and see a developer […]
The cat names were internal (though they may have come from the link above originally, it wasn’t a marketing decision at inception). All MacOS’s, much like just about every other piece of software made by every other company, have/had codenames. With OSX, they just made them public is all.
OK, so imagine this: You’re Apple Computer, Inc. (still) and it’s December 1997. You’ve just blocked British Mac-clone maker Shaye from licensing Mac OS 8, thereby putting it pretty much out of luck for new products; in fact, Shaye will revert to selling genuine Apple gear at the end of the year. Still, there’s something kind of catchy about Shaye’s branding… something vaguely feline: Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Lion and Lynx. Nice ring to those “big cat” names. Mrowr!

the whole cat crap has gone too far, what’s next Mac OS X Litter Box? this is the dumbest thing I have ever seen, but mostly because it’s so close to TRUTH that it just makes me cringe. How about a cool codename for once Apple?
