How to Disable “Write with Siri” Floating Button on MacOS 27 Golden Gate

If you’re a Mac user who has updated to MacOS 27 Golden Gate, you might have quickly noticed the new “Write with Siri” Siri AI floating button tool that appears alongside basically every text entry point, whether you’re in an email app, Notes, Pages, Safari, or just about anywhere else. This is part of the new Siri AI Writing Tools feature, which you might really like, or might dislike, depending. You’ll also find that when you right-click just about anything, there’s a new “Ask Siri” or “Edit with Siri” item at the very top of the contextual menu. Critics of this feature say it’s intrusive and “Microsoft-esque” whereas fans of the Siri AI Writing Tools appreciate its always-there convenience of the floating button.
Curiously, there’s no easy toggle in the System Settings to disable these features, aside from just completely disabling Siri AI in general on the Mac, but if you don’t mind turning to the command line, you can disable the “Write with Siri”, “Ask Siri”, “Edit with Siri” and related floating button features in MacOS 27 Golden Gate.
How to Disable “Write with Siri” AI Floating Buttons on MacOS 27 Golden Gate
- Open the Terminal application, found in /Applications/Utilities/ and enter the following commands:
- Hit return and authenticate, then enter the following command:
- Again hit return and authenticate if necessary
- Restart your Mac
sudo mkdir -p /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/WritingTools LightweightUI_macOS -dict Enabled -bool false
This will completely disable the Siri AI floating button, Ask Siri floating button, Write with Siri floating button, the Writing Tools floating buttons, and all similar Siri AI contextual actions and buttons on the Mac.
It’s unfortunate that users must turn to the Terminal to disable these polarizing features, but that’s where things are at the moment. It’s conceivable, even likely perhaps, that a future update to MacOS will provide a user friendly toggle in System Settings to disable the Siri AI and Siri Writing Tools features, but for the time being that is not the case.
How to Re-Enable “Write with Siri” Writing Tools in MacOS 27
If you wish to revert the change and restore the Siri AI writing tools, Write with Siri, Ask Siri contextual menu, etc, simply run the following command in Terminal:
sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/WritingTools LightweightUI_macOS
You will need to reboot again to get the writing tools and floating Siri writing buttons back again.
