iOS 11.1 update available to download now

Apple has released iOS 11.1 to the general public. The new version of iOS includes a variety of bug fixes, feature enhancements, security improvements, and other additions to the mobile operating system, making iOS 11.1 a recommended update for iPhone and iPad users running a prior version of iOS 11.

Separately, Apple also released the final version of macOS High Sierra 10.13.1 for Macs, security updates to prior Mac OS releases, watchOS 4.1 for Apple Watch, and tvOS 11.1 for Apple TV.

iOS 11.1 includes over 70 new emoji icons, including dinosaurs, pie, broccoli, bearded people, breastfeeding person, gender neutral characters, wizard, pixies, zebra, scarf, brain, vampires, and a variety of other characters.

Additionally, iOS 11.1 restores the popular 3D Touch multitasking gesture on iPhone devices equipped with 3D Touch.

Users who have been experiencing any problems with iOS 11, along with perceived battery drain or slow performance, should also install iOS 11.1, as the update may relieve some of those issues.

How to Download and Install iOS 11.1 Update

Users can download iOS 11.1 now through the Software Update mechanism on their devices, or through iTunes. The easiest way is through the OTA update available on the device in the Settings app.

Back up your iPhone or iPad before installing iOS 11.1 update.

  1. Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone or iPad
  2. Go to “General” and then to “Software Update”
  3. Choose “Download and Install” when iOS 11.1 becomes available

The delta update is around 180mb if you’re coming from a prior iOS 11 build.

Users can also choose to download and update to iOS 11.1 via iTunes by connecting an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to their computer, launching iTunes, and installing the update when requested.

iOS 11.1 IPSW Firmware Download Links

Another option is to download iOS 11.1 as firmware in the form of IPSW files. The IPSW firmware is then used with iTunes to update the system software of a compatible iPhone or iPad manually. This is generally more advanced and not recommended for most users:

Be sure to save the IPSW file with a .ipsw file extension, otherwise iTunes may not recognize it.

Since updating to 11.1 yesterday, my 6s kept on going back to switch on screen with the wheel turning and asking for passcode for me to re-enter to use. So so frustrating. Anyone knows what to do or to wait for the next update release to fix these bugs.
Thanks to Michael P for advice on Bluetooth. Yes found mine was switched on after upgrade. No wonder power went down quickly even though it was on low battery mode.

I update my phone and after 5 hours of using the phone it turns off by itself only showing apple logo and keep restarting phone.

Hey – after i updated to 11.1 on my iphone 6s., noticed that battery drains down so quickly even if not used for almost 15 mins (within 15 mins, donot use iphone 6s, the battery goes down from 100 to 82). Not only this – iphone goes warm and hot when we use it heavily.

Never experienced this such behavior prior to 11.1, I thought this will resolve battery drainings, however its more worse! I should have waited for 11.1.1 or 11.2.

Check that the update didn’t turn “on” bluetooth – they do that for no apparent reason, I’ve never used BT yet like half the updates they turn it on. And BT is a notorious battery eater

  7. David says:

I’ll wait a few days to update to see if I can tolerate the new bugs they dropped in until they are fixed in iOS 11.1.1. LOL

It say file corrupt when i try to update

    • Paul says:

Find the proper device firmware version, then right-click and choose “Save As” to download the IPSW. Make sure it has a .ipsw file extension and not a .zip file.

It’s important to get the proper IPSW file and have it download completely before using it. Otherwise you can update through OTA or iTunes as normal.

Did they fix battery draining issue for older device?

  11. Sally says:

    It could hardly get worse.

  12. Scott says:

Maybe instead of focusing on stupid emoji, Apple should fix all the damn bugs! The 11.x version of iOS is the buggiest I’ve seen. It was clearly released too soon, mostly likely due to management pressure on developers and QA teams. Ever since upgrading to 11, my iPhone uses battery power more aggressively, is sluggish, and has now started freezing up and crashing when using basic apps like the actual phone function. I don’t need a cheeseburger emoji – I need a reliable OS, m’kay?

    • michael p says:

Did they put the pistol back in? With all the PC stuff you listed, the pistol needs to come back
