How to Improve Recording Quality of Voice Memos on iPhone & iPad

Do you regularly use the built-in Voice Memos app to record audio using your iPhone or iPad? In that case, you may be interested in using this neat but simple trick to improve the quality of the recorded audio.

Voice Memos records the audio just fine out of the box without any issues, but advanced users may sometimes want the added benefit of lossless quality, especially if they’re using an external microphone. The app records compressed audio so that the recorded files don’t take a lot of storage space on your iPhone or iPad.

How to Improve Recording Quality of Voice Memos on iPhone & iPad

You don’t need to have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS installed on your device since this feature has been available since iOS 12. Simply follow the steps below to get started.

  1. Head over to “Settings” from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad.

  2. In the settings menu, scroll down and find the Voice Memos app. Tap on it to continue.

  3. Next, select the “Audio Quality” option located under Voice Memos settings. You’ll see that it’s set to compressed by default.

  4. Now, select the “Lossless” option and you’re good to go.

That’s it, you’ve changed the recording quality for voice memos on your iOS/iPadOS device.

From now on, whenever you record audio with the Voice Memos app, it’ll be recorded with lossless quality and the resultant file size will be larger in comparison to your older recordings. Also, it goes without saying that this setting will not change your existing recordings to the lossless format.

Lossless audio recording can be great for many reasons, including capturing higher quality voice recordings, but also if you plan on recording music, or any other sound or audio, and you want it captured in the highest fidelity possible from your device and its microphone.

If you regret not using this setting for all the clips you’ve recorded so far, you may be interested in taking advantage of Voice Memo’s built-in editor to enhance your audio recordings. Although it doesn’t provide the quality of a lossless recording, it does help in removing background noise. However, this feature is limited to devices running iOS 14/iPadOS 14 or later.
