iOS 16.1 beta

iOS 16.1 beta 4 and iPadOS 16.1 beta 5 have been released by Apple to users enrolled in the beta testing programs for iPhone and iPad operating systems. Typically the developer beta version rolls out first and is soon followed by the same build as a public beta.

Users active in the beta testing programs can find iOS 16.1 beta 4 and iPadOS 16.1 beta 5 available to download now from Settings app > General > Software Update.

The latest iPadOS 16.1 betas expand support for Stage Manager, the new multitasking interface for iPad, to more iPad Pro models that have A12X and A12Z CPU’s, which include the 2018 and 2020 model years for iPad Pro 11″ and 12.9″. Previously, Apple had limited Stage Manager to iPad models with an M1 CPU or better, making this change a welcome improvement to iPad users whose devices are still perfectly capable pieces of hardware.

iOS 16.1 betas for iPhone include some minor changes to refine the already available iOS 16, including adding a battery percentage indicator to more iPhone models, support for Live Activities on the iPhone lock screen, and we can reasonably assume some work to address ongoing iOS 16 issues and problems that are bug related.

Because Apple typically goes through a variety of beta versions before issuing a final release to the general public, and because Apple has said that iPadOS 16 will be released in October, it’s reasonable to assume that we are getting closer to the final release of iPadOS 16.1 for iPad and iOS 16.1 for iPhone.

Currently, the most recent stable builds of iOS are iOS 16.0.2 for iPhone, andiPadOS 15.7 for iPad.
