As you likely have noticed, and we already mentioned, every single iPhone model that can run iOS 26, also can run iOS 27. That’s quite generous of Apple, and it makes sense given that iOS 27 is an update that is focused on performance enhancements and improvements, rather than tons of new giant flashy features, well, aside from all the new Siri AI features anyway. And it’s the Siri AI features and Apple Intelligence capabilities where some of the distinctions of iPhone models begins to show.
iPhone Models Supporting All New AI Features of iOS 27
iOS 27 brings tons of new AI features to iPhone, and that’s where the divide in support starts to show. There are actually three categories of iOS 27 AI support for iPhone, so let’s break them down:
Full Advanced Siri AI Support in iOS 27
iPhone models that will support every new Siri AI feature in iOS 27 is a much smaller list, limited to the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air. This includes features like custom Siri voices, and advanced on-device AI models.
Obviously any new iPhone introduced this year, like iPhone 18, will also support the new AI features too.
Standard AI, Apple Intelligence, and Siri AI Feature Support in iOS 27
The entire iPhone 16 lineup including iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, as well as iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, will support standard Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features.
iOS 27 iPhone Models with No AI / Apple Intelligence Support
All other iPhone models that are iPhone 15 and older, including iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, etc, will run iOS 27, but they will not receive the new AI, Apple Intelligence, and Siri AI features. These devices will still have access to improved Siri, but it’s not nearly as capable as what is available on the higher end newer iPhone models, and these devices won’t have Apple Intelligence or other key AI features. If you have an older iPhone model like this, you can always use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc, to have AI features on your device instead.
What about iPad Models Supporting iPadOS 27?
While every iPhone supporting iOS 26 will also run iOS 27, that is not the case with iPad unfortunately, and some iPad models got cut from iPadOS 27 support. For example, iPad Pro 11″ 1st gen (2018 model) and iPad Pro 12.9″ 3rd gen 2018 model, will not run iPadOS 27. This is disappointing to many users for obvious reasons, especially given that iPadOS 27 is set to be a performance enhancing update, so it’s unclear why those iPad devices will not get the performance improvements.
iPadOS 27 will run on iPad Pro 11″ 2nd gen and newer, iPad Pro 12.9″ 4th gen and newer, iPad Air 5th gen and newer, iPad Mini 6th gen and newer, and iPad 9 and newer.
