MacOS Ventura includes a variety of new features and changes, including a new multitasking interface called Stage Manager, Handoff support for FaceTime calls, the ability to use an iPhone as a webcam via Continuity Camera, functions to schedule the sending of emails, unsending email capabilities, functions to edit and unsend Messages sent via iMessage, Safari Tab Groups, Weather app, Clock app, and a redesigned System Preferences that looks like it was pasted over from an iPhone, and many more smaller changes.

Occasionally when a user goes to update macOS system software through the Software Update preference panel, they’ll find the updates that are shown are outdated, not showing up at all, or not showing all of the updates that you know to be available (for example, a newly released system software update).

If you find that the proper Mac software updates are not showing as available in the Software Update panel, you can refresh the Software Update preference panel in macOS.

Curiously enough, the refresh option is not shown in any of the menu items however, so if you’re not familiar with the refresh option, you’re certainly not alone.

If you’re confident in Siri’s abilities to dictate text and accurately relay what you are saying into a message, you can enable a feature that allows you to automatically send messages from Siri on iPhone without asking for a confirmation first.

When the confirmation is enabled, you’ll see the text typed out that Siri has dictated from your voice to the message, and then Siri will ask to confirm to send the message. With the automatic sending feature enabled, there is no confirmation, Siri will just send the message right away. Sound good? Apple has released iOS 16.1 beta 3 and iPadOS 16.1 beta 4 to users enrolled in the beta testing programs for iPhone and iPad system software.

Notably, iPadOS 16.1 beta 4 brings the Stage Manager multitasking system to additional iPad Pro models that have A12X or A12Z CPU’s. Previously, Stage Manager was only available on M1 equipped iPad models.

iOS 16.1 beta for iPhone brings a few small new features to the iPhone as well, including adding the battery percentage indicator on more iPhone models, and support for the Live Activities feature which allows for seeing real time data on the iPhone lock screen to things like sports scores. Presumably the beta also includes various bug fixes to address some of the problems with iOS 16 experienced by some users as well.

Do you want all of your Messages to automatically delete themselves after a specified time period from your iPhone or iPad? You can configure a Messages History setting that will allow for the automatic removal of message conversations after a chosen period of time.

This auto-delete Messages setting is perhaps most useful as a storage saving mechanism and should not really be considered a privacy setting for a variety of reasons, and it has some obvious downsides too, mainly that you could potentially forever lose some great memories, conversations, chat transcripts, photos, and videos exchanged between you and whoever else you’re communicating with.
