Apple has made a release candidate for macOS Big Sur 11.1 available for users enrolled in the public beta and developer beta testing programs.

Usually a release candidate build indicates the final version is coming soon, perhaps along with the release of the impending iOS 14.3 release, which is scheduled for next week.

macOS Big Sur 11.1 is unlikely to include any major new features or changes, but likely focuses on bug fixes and feature enhancements to the Big Sur operating system. It’s conceivable that some of the reported problems with macOS Big Sur may be addressed in the update.

How to Download MacOS Big Sur 11.1 Release Candidate

Assuming the Mac is enrolled in the beta testing program, you’ll find macOS 11.1 RC available as a download. Always backup the Mac with Time Machine before updating system software.

  1. From the  Apple menu, go to “System Preferences”
  2. Select “Software Update”
  3. Choose to update macOS Big Sur 11.1 RC

As with all system software updates, a reboot of the Mac is required to complete installation.

The majority of Mac users should run stable final builds of system software, but if you’re bent on being on the cutting edge and running beta releases, anyone can install the developer beta or public beta onto their Macs.

Aside from the Mac, another release candidate build for iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 has been made available for iPhone and iPad beta testers.
