Typically Mac users will retrieve the screen resolution of connected displays through the Displays system preference panel in OS X. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that approach, it’s easy and quick, but because it uses the graphical interface of OS X it’s not necessary helpful for scripting purposes or remote management through Remote Login and SSH connections. In these situations, and plenty of others, you may wish to retrieve the current screen resolutions of displays from the command line in Mac OS X.

Yes, many users will know how to do this, but it always surprises me how many people don’t know how to remove an app from their iOS device. Cutting and pasting files within the Mac OS X Finder is an easy way to move files and folders around on the Mac, particularly for Windows converts, but by default the cut and paste function changes permissions and ownership during the file move process. For the most part that is desirable, but if you are logged in as an administrator and are modifying another users files or folders, even the Guest user, you may wish to preserve file ownership and user privileges (permissions in unix-speak) when moving the documents around. Mac OS makes this simple through a hidden function called “Paste Item Exactly”, it’s a somewhat advanced feature in terms of need, but it’s accessible easily through the Edit menu.

Safari Bookmarks default to saving their names as the title of a webpage or website. That means if a site has a long title, the bookmark name will be equally as long. For accessing bookmarks through the Bookmarks menu that isn’t too big of a deal, but when you’re using the Safari Favorites Bar, long names become truncated and often meaningless, thus renaming them can be a good idea.

Apple will unveil it’s new “wearable” device alongside the iPhone 6 on September 9, according to a new report from the well-sourced Re/Code.

Commonly referred to as the “iWatch”, the Re/Code report calls it a “wearable” and mentions the new Apple product will make use of several iOS 8 features, including HealthKit and HomeKit. Re/Code also speculates that it could be used to have some interaction with Apple TV.
